How Quieter Tyres can Elevate your Driving Experience

27th February 2025

Drivers are always looking for ways to enhance their overall comfort and driving experience, especially when regularly undertaking long journeys or daily commutes. However, one crucial yet overlooked factor is opting for quieter tyres. The tyres you choose can play a significant role in determining the amount of road noise you hear in the cabin, affecting both comfort and concentration. This is particularly important for hybrid and electric vehicle users, where the absence of an engine makes road noise more noticeable.

What Contributes to Tyre Noise?

Tyre noise is generated by the interaction between the tyre tread and the road surface. As your tyres roll across the road surface, this creates air vibrations and turbulence that then generates sound energy.

The noise generated is likely caused by air becoming trapped and released within a tyre’s tread grooves as the wheels rotate. Tyre compounds & tread patterns, the type of vehicle, driving style, speed of travel, tyre damage and wear, and even the road conditions can also influence the amount of sound energy generated by tyres.

The louder the tyre noise, the more it can cause driver fatigue and interfere with your ability to concentrate, making long journeys feel more exhausting than they need to be. It also hampers your driving experience by reducing your ability to enjoy conversations, listen to music or even follow your sat-nav instructions.

What are the Benefits of Quieter Tyres?

Switching to a quieter tyre not only enhances your safety and comfort but also your overall driving experience – making for a more enjoyable drive all around.

  • Enhanced Cabin Comfort: Less road noise makes for a more comfortable drive, allowing drivers to immerse themselves in conversations with passengers or listen to music more clearly.
  • Reduced Driver Fatigue: With fewer distractions caused by road noise, this will reduce driver fatigue levels, which can be particularly important on longer drives.
  • Better Safety: With improved, smoother handling and fewer distractions caused by noise compared to regular tyres, this allows drivers to focus more on the journey ahead.
  • Less Noise Pollution: Quieter tyres benefit drivers and their passengers, but reduced tyre noise means less environmental noise pollution, having a more positive impact on both humans and local wildlife.

Elevate your Driving Experience with Ecoura

Our newly developed Ecoura tyre is designed to elevate your driving experience. Ecoura is a high-performance tyre optimised for superior ride comfort, reduced noise and greater performance efficiency to deliver an unrivalled driving experience.

Here’s what makes Ecoura stand out:

  • Enhanced ride comfort & noise reduction: The varying tread block pitch reduces noise by removing resonant frequencies for a quieter, more comfortable drive. Compartmentalising grooves work together to minimise and help contain noise.
  • Wet grip & aquaplaning resistance: Deep circumferential and outer grooves facilitate efficient water evacuation for high levels of aquaplaning resistance and maximised traction in wet conditions.
  • Exceptional traction in all conditions: Engineered for high levels of straight line and cornering traction on both wet and dry surfaces.
  • Optimised, lightweight design: Optimised, lightweight tyre design reduces material consumption and waste for greater efficiency while maintaining performance.

How can I Check a Tyre’s Noise Rating?

All tyres come with EU labelling, disclosing an individual tyre size’s Rolling Resistance, Wet Grip and Noise rating. The exterior noise rating is sorted into classes A, B or C, with A being the best noise level performance, as well as a noise rating expressed in decibels. These measurements are shown towards the bottom of the physical tyre label or displayed online. You can find out more about EU tyre labelling and what it means in our blog.
