Warriors Off To A Flyer At Hull KR

17th February 2022

Wigan Warriors got their Betfred Super League season started with a bang last Friday night, with the Cherry and Whites defeating last year’s semi-finalists Hull KR at Craven Park in a 24-10 curtain-raising win.

New Wigan head coach Matt Peet made his official debut at the helm of the Warriors, and it turned out to be quite the night on the East coast, with a handful of tries from Jake Bibby (2), Liam Marshall (2) and the returning Jai Field.

Jake Bibby got the scoring underway at the eight minute mark, capitalising on a Hull KR handling error and being the quickest to find the ball and take it over the line.

Field, who ended up missing nearly all of the 2021 season due to an injury in Round One, followed up Bibby’s try with an incredible chase of a kick before taking the bouncing ball in his stride and making his way over the paint for a second.

The moment of the match, however, goes to Liam Marshall. After some staunch defending, Wigan found themselves on their own tryline before an offload freed Jake Bibby to break the Robins’ line and pass it over to his winger, Liam Marshall. From there, the 25-year-old turned on the afterburners and scored a full-length of the pitch try.

Another handling error led to another Bibby try before Liam Marshall closed out the show with a sliding finish in the corner of Hull KR’s tryline.

It was a day of debuts in East Yorkshire, with Kaide Ellis and Cade Cust making their first appearances since switching from the NRL in the off-season, as well as Patrick Mago making an appearance off the bench.

Next time out, Wigan welcome Leeds Rhinos to the DW Stadium in a game dubbed as ‘War of the Roses’ as the Lancashire-Yorkshire rivalry heats up again.
