Solid start for Dan Zelos and Davanti eSports at virtual Brands Hatch
19th January 2021Two thrilling races, wheel to wheel action and debutant Dan Zelos making a solid start – the Mini Challenge eSeries opening round was just like the real thing.
Zelos and Davanti eSports made their sim racing debut at a digital version of the historic Brands Hatch thanks to thanks to the racing simulator set up by VRRC (Virtual Reality Racing Club) and the gaming platform Assetto Corsa.
Lining up against both real-world racing rivals and top sim racers, this was another learning experience for Davanti Tyres driver Zelos, as he got to grips with a race style that is so close to reality, but with a few key differences.
What didn’t change was Zelos’ eye for an opportunity. His trademark bravery in grabbing overtaking opportunities remained and helped him finish the day 4th in the ‘real-world driver’ standings.
“It was really interesting to race in the sim,” said Zelos. “There are some key differences but having got used to the system and seen the competition close-up, this is going to be a fun championship.
“I do also believe it’s going to help keep me sharp. Not only am I able to stay familiar with the tracks on the actual Mini Challenge calendar, but racing in the simulator is much more immersive than racing on a console or watching a track video.
“Being able to go for gaps and drive as we would in a physical car means I’m able to slip into race-mode more easily when the racing season comes around.
“But first things first, I need to do well at virtual Donington this weekend!”
The next round of racing is at Donington Park on Saturday, January 23. Free practice starts from 9am and is broadcast live on Youtube at MINIChallengeUK and Facebook Live at MINIChallengeUK with highlights on Amazon Prime.
