How to check your tyres before you travel this bank holiday
22nd August 2022The late summer bank holiday is approaching, which means many people will be taking to the roads for a final weekend getaway before the new school term begins.
If this is you, have you added ‘check tyres’ to your holiday preparations to do list?
In 2021, over 41,000 motorists broke down due to tyre issues, amounting to almost a quarter of all breakdowns. This number could be greatly reduced if more people carry out simple tyre checks.
Here’s our top tips on how to keep your tyres, yourself and your passengers safe this bank holiday:
- Look over your tyres for any cuts, bulges or signs of wear
- Adjust your tyre pressure levels accordingly to account for the amount of luggage and passengers you’re carrying. Different vehicles require different tyre pressures – you can find out what yours should be by checking either in your handbook, petrol cap or on the inside of the drivers door
- If you have a spare tyre, don’t forget to check this over for signs of wear or damage
- Check your tread depth – the minimum should be 1.6mm as required by law. To do so, place a 20p coin inside the main grooves of the tread. If you can’t see the raised outer rim on the coin and the words TWENTY PENCE, then you have sufficient tread
