How can I tell if my tyres are all-season?

14th April 2026

Choosing the right tyres for your vehicle is a crucial decision that impacts safety, performance, and how your vehicle handles hazards. All-season tyres are a versatile and increasingly popular choice among drivers, especially for those who frequently encounter unpredictable weather, such as in the UK.

To be sure the tyres you currently have aren’t winter or summer tyres, there are a few telltale signs on the sidewall.

How to identify your tyres

  • Check the tyre name – All-season tyres can usually be identified with names including “season,” “all-weather,” or “cross-climate.” Winter tyres will usually feature “ice”, “snow” or “grip” in the title.
  • 3PMSF marking – All tyres in the EU and UK that are certified and tested to perform in snow and ice are labelled with a distinctive 3PMSF mark. This is usually a three-peak mountain with a snowflake icon, which is very often paired with an M+S marking. This doesn’t exclusively identify a tyre as all-season as it also applies to winter tyres, but it helps you understand the tyre’s capabilities.
  • Tread design – All-season tyres tend to have more sipes than a summer tyre to help with traction in wet and icy conditions, whereas summer tyre tread patterns are much simpler with larger, solid tread blocks for better dry grip. When viewed from a distance, an all-season pattern often forms a distinctive V-shape exampled below.

Why should I choose an all-season tyre?

There are many reasons why an all-season tyre is beneficial over dedicated seasonal tyres, some of which are detailed in this blog. With the cost of living continuing to increase, it can be a sensible economic choice as opposed to switching between seasonal tyres each year.
