Are your tyres prepared for the summer heat?

3rd July 2026

Summer may have only just officially begun, but the UK has already experienced 2 heatwaves in as many months, with record-breaking temperatures. As periods of extreme heat become more of a regular occurrence, it is essential to be aware of your tyre condition to ensure optimal performance and efficiency.

What happens to tyres in the heat?

When the air inside a tyre heats up it expands, which increases the pressure. When a tyre is overinflated – even just marginally – beyond the recommended pressures, the contact patch (where the tyre meets the ground) is reduced, which can compromise grip and handling. In the worst cases, it can even lead to a blowout.

Exposure to the heat can also cause degradation of the rubber, which reduces grip, so be sure to look over your tyres frequently during hot spells to check for any visible damage.

Tips for keeping your tyres in top condition

  • Check your tyre pressures regularly – It’s best to do this when the tyres have been stationary for some time, so not during or shortly after a long journey, as this could give a false reading. You can check the recommended PSI levels for your vehicle in the handbook or on the sticker inside the car door.
  • Keep tyres out of direct sunlight – Where possible, park your vehicle in the shade to minimise sun exposure and keep the tyres as cool as possible.
  • Take regular breaks if travelling for long distances – Breaking up long journeys with frequent stops can prevent tyres from overheating and reduce the risk of blowouts.
  • Make sure you have the correct seasonal tyres fitted – Summer or all-season tyres are most suitable for handling hot and wet weather conditions, so take a moment to check what you have fitted. Winter tyres should not be used in temperatures higher than 7℃.

Envoy has a range of summer tyres suitable for commercial and passenger car vehicles. For more information, contact your local Envoy dealer.
