Can I use a normal car tyre on my caravan?

6th August 2026

In recent years, staycations have become a favoured, budget-friendly alternative for Brits due to the rising cost of living and foreign travel. According to the AA’s recent study, 21% of Brits are planning to glamp or caravan this year, which means a potential increase in drivers new to hauling heavier vehicles. For those who may be inexperienced when it comes to proper caravan maintenance and selecting the correct tyres, here are our top tips to ensuring your caravan is compliant…

Why can I not use car tyres on my caravan?

Using standard car tyres on a caravan can be dangerous because they are not optimised for the specific handling and constant, heavy loads that caravan tyres are built for. Standard car tyres may flex too much under the weight, leading to reduced stability, overheating, and a significantly higher risk of tyre failure, which could result in a dangerous loss of control while driving.

Then what makes caravan tyres different?

While similar in appearance to car tyres, they are designed for a completely different use. The key differences include:

  • Increased Load Capacity – Caravans are expected to handle heavy loads, supporting not just the weight of the vehicle itself, but also the interiors, all of which require additional strength.
  • Commercial Rating – Caravan tyres are commercially rated (C2) with greater performance when towing, and an option to dual-fit them side by side with another caravan tyre.
  • Stiffer Sidewalls – Unlike a car tyre, which is designed with passenger comfort in mind, a caravan tyre prioritises handling over comfort. The sidewall is built to handle static loads, prevent dangerous sway, and withstand long periods of being parked up.

Some tips and tricks for caravan tyres

Caravan tyres require care and attention throughout their life, but can often get forgotten about when not in frequent use.
Check your tyre pressures regularly – All trailers, similar to cars, will have a plate on the chassis that outlines the suggested pressures needed for your tyres based on the weight in the caravan. Always ensure your tyres are inflated to the manufacturer’s recommendations.

  • Inspect for damage before long journeys – Before you head out on your holidays or weekend trips, look for cracks, cuts, or bulges in the sidewalls.
  • Watch out for ageing – Caravans and trailers don’t require an MOT check in the same way as cars, so it can be easy to miss an ageing tyre. Ensure you keep an eye on the age of your tyres, which usually need replacing every 5–7 years.
  • Don’t risk overloading your caravan – Your caravan tyres are rated for a certain weight, so keep a close eye on your towing weight and avoid exceeding the load rating of your tyres, which could cause a puncture or blowout.
  • Mind the tyres during winter storage – Health checks remain essential even when your caravan or trailer is stationary. Regularly monitor tyre pressures, unload any excess weight from the vehicle’s interior, and use a cover to shield it against harmful UV rays if parked outside.
