Why are my Tyres Losing Pressure?

why are my tyres losing pressure

Regularly checking and maintaining the right tyre pressure is essential for your safety, fuel efficiency and overall vehicle performance. Underinflated tyres can be potentially dangerous as they can lead to blowouts and accidents on the road.

But why do tyres lose pressure over time? At Landsail, we’re here to help you understand the common causes and how to resolve them:

Temperature Changes: Hot weather can cause your tyre pressure to increase, while colder temperatures can lower it. A 10°C temperature change can lead to a pressure change of 1-2 PSI. This can be a common cause of changes in your tyre pressures, so stay safe and check your tyre pressure regularly during any major weather shifts.

Slow Punctures: Even a small puncture or microscopic tear can allow air to escape from your tyres over time. Driving on an underinflated tyre can cause more damage as the sidewalls can begin to wear away and increase the chance of further punctures or tears. So if you suspect one of your tyres has a puncture, it’s best to get it checked and repaired by a professional as soon as possible.

General Wear and Tear: All tyres naturally lose air over time, losing between 1-3 PSI each month, which is why it is important to regularly check and top up your tyres to keep within guidelines. However, worn or damaged tyres can deflate much faster. Look for cracks in the sidewall, visible rim damage or worn-out treads. Tyres should typically be replaced every 20,000 miles or sooner if there’s visible damage.

Bead Damage: The tyre bead – the edge where the tyre meets the rim – helps keep a secure, airtight seal. If this becomes damaged, which normally occurs if a tyre does become underinflated, air can leak out, often showing as bubbles around the rim. Get any bead damage assessed by a tyre expert to prevent further issues.

Faulty Valve: A cracked or brittle valve can let air escape, even if the valve core is intact. Make sure the valve cap is always securely in place and regularly inspect the valve for any signs of wear.

While tyre pressure loss isn’t always obvious, regular checks can help to boost your safety, improve fuel efficiency, and extend tyre life. We recommend proactive inspections, timely repairs and consulting qualified professionals for any tyre-related issues. Want more tips on tyre maintenance?
