Racing legend David Cox

5th September 2025

Darlington-based racing driver David Cox or “Coxie”, as he is otherwise known, has firmly made his mark in the racing scene. With a motorsport career spanning over 40 years, he’s not ready to hang up his helmet just yet.

Now in his seventies, his racing debut came in his mid 20s on motorbikes, but he soon moved into car racing on grass tracks, then into rallycross which he pursued for 10 years, travelling across Europe, Ireland and the UK.

After a serious accident and a subsequent move into single venue rallying (which he still competes in occasionally now), a leisurely trip to Knockhill was the start of a new racing passion. David had watched a Legends race in 1998 for small motorcycle-engined cars and became instantly hooked, so much so that it’s still something he supports today.

From there, he went on to compete in the Rover Tomcat circuit racing championship, followed by the highly regarded Northern Saloon Sports Car Championship (NSSCC).

With such a varied motorsport career came many highlights, one of which was competing at the Daytona circuit in the USA.

Commenting on his experiences to date, David said:

“I have had many good cars, met loads of people and had great experiences. We have raced around Europe, the UK, and most memorably, Daytona.”

Supporting David Cox along the way has been Walkers Tyres in Darlington. Their long-standing relationship, spanning four decades, began with owner Alex Walker helping Cox with his racing tyres, and now, with David showing no signs of slowing down, Alex’s son Dan continues to provide the same high standards of service for him.

“They often help me at the last minute and their support has been invaluable to our small outfit – I owe them so much. They are the friendliest bunch of people you can work with, and nothing is a problem for them. We have been working together for 43 years, and I’m looking forward to a few more.”

Most recently, David has been competing on Davanti’s Protoura Race tyres across the BRSCC Club Trophy, the NSSCC and the SW Motorsports ClubSport Trophy, showcasing a brand new Davanti-branded livery.
