Prioritise electric vehicle tyre maintenance and avoid further rising costs

14th December 2022

While demand for electric vehicles remains high – with a current market share of 21% – the cost of maintaining them is set to become more expensive in the next few years.

By 2025, EV owners will have to pay road tax, the same as combustion engine vehicle owners. Not only that, any new electric car registered on or after 1st April 2025 worth £40,000 or more will also have to pay the expensive car supplement, amounting to an additional £520 per year.

As these costs are unavoidable, it’s never been more important to look after your vehicle to prevent paying out even more for repairs, and that includes your tyres.

It’s important you fit appropriate tyres for your electric vehicle to ensure you get the best out of its performance. Primarily, they must be able to withstand the additional weight that comes from the battery. When compared to traditional combustion engines the weight of an EV can put added pressure on the tyres, accelerating wear, so it’s important to select tyres with a heavier load carrying capacity. Also, the weight of EV’s can affect their stopping distance, putting further strain on the tyres. So again, be sure to choose tyres that can handle these characteristics.

Check out our additional tips on how to choose the right tyre for your electric vehicle.

Choosing the right tyres for an electric vehicle is not only an important consideration for passenger car owners, but van drivers too, and Davanti’s DX440 light commercial van tyre is the kind of solution fleets will be looking for. The DX440 offers an all-purpose tyre solution – not only is it a popular choice for delivery drivers and tradesmen driving traditional combustion engine vans, it is also the 100% OE tyre for the electric VN5 van from LEVC.

Like electric passenger cars, electric vans carry extra weight distributed in a very different way to a traditional van due to the battery. They also deliver more torque than a regular van, which poses its own challenges for tyres and the steering angles are tighter.

“Electric vehicles have a greater load with differing weight distribution to the traditional commercial van. However, the DX440 was always designed to be versatile and extensive testing highlights it maintains the quality and reliable performance transport operators need,” says Sean Maddocks, Sales Director for the UK and Ireland at Davanti Tyres.
