How we test Protoura Sport DSP Runflat tyres

18th December 2023

When developing the Protoura Sport DSP Runflat tyre, we set out to achieve the highest performance standard possible. Our original Protoura Sport tyre has built up a strong reputation within the ultra-high performance tyre market, and we wanted to maintain these credentials with the evolution of the range.

To do so, we ensured that our testing and development process was carried out to the highest standards possible, and here’s how…

How a standard runflat tyre is tested

To ensure a tyre remains inflated when a puncture occurs, it has to undertake a series of stringent, repeated tests that push the technology to the limit. The standard runflat test must be compliant with ECE Regulation Annex 7 for the tyre to be legally sold in Europe. This is called the Drum Test, a test of endurance conducted in laboratory-controlled conditions. This involves the tyre running on a steel drum for 60 minutes without deflation. The tyre’s circumference is also assessed before and after the drum test to measure whether any variation or deviation is within the tolerance levels to pass.

How Protoura Sport DSP Runflat is tested

We went above and beyond the standard drum test requirement, carrying out the below additional tests in line with original equipment (OE) standards for runflat technology, putting it in the same category as premium runflat tyres.

Each of these tests were carried out at our European development centre, Applus+ IDIADA in Spain, which boasts some of the best testing facilities in the world.

Rim Roll-Off

This test goes a step beyond what the standard drum test can assess. It measures whether the tyre can stay mounted to the rim when deflated and undergoing lateral forces. Tested outside of laboratory conditions, this assessment is made on the track when the vehicle is performing a series of J turns at speed. To be successful and meet OE requirements, the tyre must remain mounted to the rim at speeds of up to 50 km/h – Protoura Sport DSP Runflat exceeded this.

RPA Sensitivity Test

For vehicles that are fitted with TPMS sensors to alert drivers if their tyre has lost pressure, this test ensures that the tyre performance is within the tolerance bounds expected by these sensors. To do so, it determines the variance in tyre circumference between inflated and uninflated states. Protoura Sport DSP Runflat was tested using industry-leading equipment and methods, and the results proved the tyre was well within the required bounds.

Pop-On Pressure

When a tyre deflates, stability is, of course, reduced, and it becomes more challenging for the tyre to remain mounted to the rim. Runflat tyres are fitted to specially-designed wheels which feature an additional hump that works in line with the tyre bead to keep the tyre in place when it deflates. The pop-on pressure test ensures precise calibration of the tyre’s bead tension for correct retention and a safe amount of pressure to mount onto the rim. Protoura Sport DSP Runflat is easy to both mount and dismount, with sufficient force maintained on the wheel for reliable operation.

Other testing

Alongside all of these tests, the Protoura Sport DSP Runflat also underwent a series of wet and dry tests on the track under normal inflation, to ensure comfort, among other characteristics, was not compromised. These tests included:

  • Aquaplaning
  • Wet braking
  • Dry braking
  • Wet handling
  • Dry handling
  • Noise
  • Comfort

Our testing partner

All of the above tests were carried out through our partner, TREAD, an independent British automotive testing organisation. TREAD has been commissioned by Davanti to manage our product testing schemes and prototype development since 2017.
