How the summer heat can impact your tyres
26th June 2026
Summer has officially begun, which brings the potential for even more unprecedented high temperatures following the hottest June day ever recorded and a red weather warning for heat in certain parts of the UK.
A sudden soar in temperature can have an affect on your tyres, so it’s important to carry out more regular pressure checks during a hot spell.
How can the heat affect my tyres?
The air inside your tyres heats up just like the air outside, and this air then expands, causing the pressure to increase which in turn compromises the tyre structure. Even a marginal increase in pressure can lead to overinflation of the tyres, subsequently resulting in damage such as cracks, tears, or even a blowout.
However it’s not only tyre pressure you need to be aware of in the heat, it’s also important to check over your rubber for any visible damage. Degradation of the rubber is a risk when tyres overheat, which then reduces the tyre’s capability to grip, increasing braking distances.
How can I tell if my tyres are overheating?
If your tyres feel hot to the touch, this is a clear sign of overheating. If your car is parked, moving it into the shade out of direct sunlight will help. When taking a long road trip, be sure to make regular stops if the weather is particularly hot to give the tyres a chance to cool down.
When should I check my tyre pressure?
It’s best to check your tyre pressures weekly during a hot spell, but do so when the tyres are completely cool and haven’t been driven on for a while. Checking them just after a drive could lead to a false reading.
If you are unsure what your tyre pressures should be, you can find the information in your vehicle handbook, or on the inside of the car door.
What are the best tyres for the heat?
It’s important to fit your vehicle with summer tyres for the warmer months, as they are specifically designed to adapt to wet and dry conditions. Using the correct tyres for the season will enhance your grip and braking capabilities, not to mention optimise the lifespan of your tyres.
