How potholes can affect your tyres
16th April 2026
The aftermath of the cold, wet winter weather has exacerbated the current state of UK roads which are overrun with potholes.
It’s even becoming a growing trend for drivers to purchase SUVs to be able to navigate the poor road surfaces. But when you feel the impact on a pothole, how does it actually affect your tyres and is it something to get checked out? Fuzz Townshend spoke to Paul at Glossop Tyres to find out the most common pothole-related issues that come into the garage…
Punctures
The sudden, sharp impact as a tyre makes contact with a pothole can cause the rubber to be pinched against the metal rim, creating internal damage. This can sometimes lead to an immediate puncture.
Tracking and misalignment
When hitting a pothole at speed, it can cause the suspension components to bend or shift, which can then alter the steering and alignment of the vehicle. Driving with the tracking like this can result in your tyres wearing unevenly and prematurely.
If you feel your steering wheel is off centre when you’re driving in a straight line or you can feel vibrations through the steering, it’s important to get your alignment checked by a professional.
