Guide to runflat tyres with Protoura Sport Runflat

20th July 2023

Recently, we expanded our hugely popular Protoura Sport range to include the Protoura Sport DSP Runflat, designed for drivers to experience the benefits and performance of Protoura Sport with the advantages of runflat technology.

Gradually increasing in popularity and the OEM choice for many of the large car manufacturers, runflat tyres are becoming more and more relevant. However many drivers may not understand their features.

So to clear up any questions you may have, read on, as we break down everything runflat tyres.

What are runflat tyres?

Runflat tyres, also known as self-supporting tyres, are designed to keep your vehicle moving forward even after a sudden loss in tyre pressure.

Unlike a traditional tyre, runflat tyres do not deflate once punctured and continue to hold the full weight of the vehicle without air, allowing you to continue driving to reach a place of safety. This means less reliance on roadside repair, and space saving benefits with the absence of a spare tyre.

The Protoura Sport DSP Runflat features integrated rim protection to prevent wheel damage and a self-supporting internal sidewall to support the weight of the vehicle and retain the tyre structure when it loses air as a result of a puncture.

How to tell if you have runflat tyres

Inspect the sidewall of your tyres for specific markings or labels that indicate they are runflat tyres. Look for acronyms such as RFT (Runflat tyre), SSR (Self-Supporting Runflat), EMT (Extended Mobility tyre), or anything similar. These markings are usually located near the tyre size information.

The Protoura Sport DSP Runflat features the ‘DSP Runflat’ marking on the sidewall, so it’s easily identifiable compared to the original Protoura Sport tyre.

If you are still uncertain, consult your vehicle owner’s manual, or contact your local Davanti dealer using our dealer locator.

Can I fit runflat tyres?

Due to the extra weight and vehicle-required design changes compared to traditional tyres, not every car is compatible with runflat tyres. Cars which are designed to work with runflat tyres have a strengthened suspension paired with a unique type of wheel rim with a raised hump that ensures the tyre remains in place if a puncture occurs. Often applicable vehicles will be fitted from the factory with runflat tyres however you may also consult your owner’s manual, or manufacturer specifications to find out if runflat tyres are suitable for your vehicle.

The Protoura Sport DSP Runflat is currently available in sizes 17”-21”.

Can I swap my tyre out for a traditional tyre?

The quick answer is yes, provided the replacement tyres adhere to the manufacturer’s recommendations, normal tyres may be fitted. However, there are a few things that should be considered before making the swap. For example, vehicles equipped with runflat tyres are less likely to include replacement tyres, repair kits, or a hand jack, and without these you may become stranded if your tyre is punctured. Additionally, your TPMS system may need to be reconfigured to the lighter tyres so it’s always important to consult an expert if ever in doubt to ensure the safety of yourself and your vehicle.

The role of TPMS with runflat tyres

Any car with runflat tyres fitted as standard will have TPMS fitted (Tyre Pressure Monitoring System). The design of a runflat tyre means that the first sign of any issues might not appear in the steering or control of your vehicle, but the TPMS warning light will notify you. However, it’s important to also carry out manual checks on your tyres regularly to look out for visible issues as often as possible. Once the TPMS warning light is enabled, the problem has already escalated.

The Protoura Sport DSP Runflat was tested above and beyond the usual testing requirements for a runflat tyre, to ensure optimal performance. Part of this testing included the RPA sensitivity test, which ensures the tyre is well within the tolerance bounds of TPMS sensors. This test determines the variance in circumference between inflated and uninflated states, for vehicles that rely on this technology to detect that a tyre has deflated.

How long can I drive on a punctured runflat tyre?

mechanic repair a tire puncture from a nail or screw. car repair and maintenance concept

If you get a puncture it is important that the tyre is replaced as soon as possible. While the risk of getting stuck at the roadside is avoided with a runflat tyre, the distance you can travel on a punctured runflat tyre is still limited to around 50 miles at reduced speeds of up to 50mph. Although you may not notice any handling or control changes with your vehicle, runflat tyres do not mitigate all risks.

It is also an important consideration that runflat tyres can not be repaired like a traditional tyre and once punctured will have to be replaced.
