Everything You Need to Know About Mud-Terrain (M/T) Tyres

11th July 2025

What are Mud-Terrain tyres?

Mud-Terrain or M/T tyres are a top choice for off-road enthusiasts looking to get the most out of off-roading.  They are designed to conquer muddy paths, rocky trails, and every type of landscape, making them an ideal companion for the adventure seekers and for professional roles that involve driving off-road.

Key features of Mud-Terrain tyres

  • Off-road performance – The primary and most important feature of mud-terrain tyres is their unparalleled off-road ability. They can easily traverse mud, sand, gravel, and rocky paths with a tread design focused on giving M/T the greatest advantage over other off-road tyres.
  • Built to withstand – With reinforced sidewalls, M/T tyres can tackle the most extreme environments without worry of damage from rocks and other sharp objects. This reinforcement also means the tyre is much more supported when driving over difficult terrains.
  • Large spaces between tread blocks – M/T tyres feature deep grooves with larger-than-normal spaces between them, designed to remove dirt or mud that accumulates between the grooves while maintaining traction on dry or sandy surfaces.

Can I drive M/T tyres on the road?

M/T tyres are generally considered professional off-road (POR)  tyres and therefore are more for use by off-roading adventurers and hobbyists. They are specifically engineered for rugged terrains. Despite being road-legal, they are typically not recommended for day-to-day use. Learn more about what a POR tyre is on our handy blog.

If you’re looking for an off-road tyre that you can also use on normal roads, a great alternative is the Terratoura A/T. Providing the perfect balance of highway and off-road performance, the Terratoura A/T provides all-weather traction and control that can take you from the norms of the suburbs, off the beaten track where adventure awaits.

Should I choose M/T tyres or A/T tyres?

It is dependent on what factors are a priority for you when looking for a tyre that can perform off-road. M/T tyres lean more into the extreme side of off-roading, while all-terrain (A/T) tyres are more designed to adapt from tarmac to gravelled paths.  M/T tyres allow access to deep mud and rock crawling for those who are happy to sacrifice the comfort of their everyday tyres for the performance of their vehicle when off-road.

Davanti’s Terratoura M/T tyre combines a rugged construction with an aggressive tread pattern, resulting in a tyre that knows no limits. It provides superior levels of traction where it’s most challenging to find, and its robust carcass construction delivers high load endurance and resistance to damage in extreme conditions.

Does an M/T tyre look aggressive?

It’s undeniable that aesthetics are a factor for those looking for off-road tyres.  M/T tyres tend to have a more aggressive look, which can be appealing for people who want that off-roading look on their vehicle. Terratoura M/T meets this criteria, with all of the attractive visual elements as well as the performance. Its wide shoulder grooves efficiently disperse mud, sand and other loose ground to increase traction while the notched, alternating shoulder blocks also create a sawtooth effect which helps the tyre bite into rutted tracks and rocky terrains.

What M/T tyres does Davanti offer?

Terratoura M/T primarily focuses on the more professional side of off-roading, with the tyres mostly falling into the POR category. Its aggressive tread pattern and rugged construction provide ultimate confidence when negotiating muddy terrains in SUVs, 4x4s and pickups. Learn more about Terratoura M/T on our product page.

If you’re more of a casual off-roader looking for a dual purpose tyre that can still handle mud and rough terrain with ease, but also provides the option of highway driving and increased ride comfort, then the Terratoura A/T is the ideal choice.
