Dan Zelos finished round six of the Porsche Sprint Challenge second in the standings as he achieved his ‘best drive so far’ at Oulton Park, but it wasn’t without its challenges.
After a promising start in practice, a change in the weather led to a costly decision for Zelos. Opting to run on wet tyres in qualifying while the track became increasingly dry saw him drop to 15th on the grid in race one.
However, luck was on his side for the weekend opener. Managing to climb two places to 13th early on, a couple of incidents on the track left just six minutes of racing action once the competition resumed. Zelos made the most of the moment, following closely behind Felix Livesey all the way to the chequered flag, avoiding any penalties and picking up 8th place.
Starting in 12th position for race two, Zelos took to the track with confidence, making a series of bold moves to secure himself a third row grid slot for the finale.
Dan then brought his fighting spirit to the track for one final time, making his best attempts to overtake rivals James Seale and Felix Livesey, but steering performance from his Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 RS Clubsport dropped off, forcing him to settle for 6th.
However, that was enough to secure him joint-second in the overall class, putting him in a good position for Knockhill in August.
Commenting on the challenges of the weekend, Dan said:
“We looked really strong during the first half of the session – which was very encouraging given I haven’t had much seat time in the Porsche in the wet – but we then went the wrong way on tyre choice in the changing conditions.
“The track was beginning to dry but it wasn’t clear which was the quicker option, so as a team we decided to cover all bases. Unfortunately it didn’t work out well for me…
“The setback gave us a mountain to climb in the races, but I was determined to move as far forward as I could.”
Dan continued:
“I did my best to try and distract the drivers ahead to force them into mistakes…I had the rotation in the car that I needed and was able to pull off some really enjoyable passes. I’d say that was my best drive in the Porsche so far, and showed what might have been had qualifying gone to plan.”
