Car Maintenance Tips to Keep it on the Road for Longer
9th May 2025
Maintaining your car’s health and dependability doesn’t have to be complicated. A few regular checks and minor adjustments can significantly extend your vehicle’s lifespan and optimise its overall performance. Here are a few easy changes you can implement today, along with some considerations for the future:
Battery Care
Infrequent car use can lead to a flat battery, as it can gradually lose power while stationary. If you don’t drive your car regularly, consider storing it in a climate-controlled environment to help maintain the battery’s stability and lifespan, or simply take it for a drive regularly.
Regular fluid checks
Maintaining proper fluid levels is a crucial aspect of car ownership. Ensuring your car has sufficient fluids will keep its components running smoothly and maintain optimal vehicle performance. Although your car typically alerts you about low oil, it’s advisable to perform a monthly check, assessing the oil’s clarity and quantity and topping it up when needed.
Similarly, your coolant and windscreen washer fluid should also be checked every few months and topped up with antifreeze if necessary. Try to avoid using plain tap water, as it may cause smearing on your windscreen and the possible risk of mineral buildup in your tank that may cause corrosion.
Replace your air filters
Your car’s filter helps avoid a buildup of dust in your car, but over time, dirt will build up and pollute your vehicle, increasing the chances of misfiring as essential components get coated.
Generally, manufacturers recommend replacing your car’s filter every few years, but this might be heavily dependent on your location and your vehicle manufacturer.
Driving habits
How you drive might be placing unnecessary stress on your vehicle, so as an easy way to extend the longevity of your vehicle, it’s recommended to maintain a steady speed and brake smoothly to extend the lifetime of your car.
For older vehicles, ensure you warm up the engine, especially in the winter, so the oil has enough time to circulate and properly lubricate your car’s engine.
Prepare the seasons
The needs of your car will change throughout the seasons, so it’s important to adjust your routine accordingly. The winter may put additional stress on your car’s battery, and in the summer, you should consider checking your coolant and regas your air conditioning early so you aren’t uncomfortable during the hot days of summer.
Use your tyres and check them often
It sounds counterproductive, but tyres generally last the longest when they are used; tyres left on a drive or in cold, wet conditions may deteriorate, with the addition of losing pressure and a risk of cracking.
It’s also recommended to check your tyres often, at least once a month, for any cracks or damage and a quick check of the tread depth to ensure they are within legal limits. We’ve got a great blog on the risks of having shallow tread here.
Replace your tyres when needed
Your tyres are the only point of contact with the road, making them one of the most essential bits of kit on your car. So it goes without saying, you should check them over often, and replace them as soon as possible if needed. Any signs of cracking, bulging, or wear are sure signs that they might need replacing.
These risks could become greater problems later, damaging parts of your vehicle or at higher speeds, a blown tyre may be a threat to life.
