40% of van tyres may be illegal.

10th September 2025

For van drivers, your vehicle is essential to your livelihood, whether for deliveries or as your mobile workshop,so it’s crucial to take care of it to stay on the road. However, a recent report suggests that a large number of van drivers are neglecting their vans, particularly when it comes to tyre maintenance.

The report conducted by Tyresafe outlines that almost 40% of light commercial vehicle (LCV) tyres are replaced with tread depths that are borderline or below the legal limit. A figure which points to a huge safety risk on our roads, with many van drivers unaware that they place themselves and others at risk, especially when carrying heavy cargo.

How to check if your tyres are below the legal limit?

Checking your tyre tread is one of the simplest tasks. For drivers in the UK, a straightforward method is the 20p test. Simply insert the coin into the grooves of the tread. If the outer band is visible, then your tyre is likely to be below the minimum tread depth, and should be checked by an expert immediately.

Alternatively, we recommend for more precise measurements, using a tread depth gauge, which you can keep in your van for an accessible way to conduct monthly checks.

It’s not just a safety risk

We understand that every penny matters, especially when it comes to vehicles that are so essential to your job.

Tyres with insufficient tread depth can see a negative impact on fuel economy and may lead to increased wear on your vehicle, or in the worst-case scenario, costly damage.

Additionally, drivers found operating vehicles with tyres below the legal tread depth risk receiving a hefty fine amounting to thousands of pounds and points on their driving licence.
