The advantages of winter tyres in the cold with Landsail

28th November 2024

With winter well and truly here, it’s important to think about the tyre choice on your vehicle. Winter tyres – unlike summer tyres – are designed to operate at temperatures below 7 degrees Celsius, providing reliable grip and performance despite the cold, and sometimes frozen ground.

Developed for the demands of winter driving, winter tyres are made with materials which adapt to the cold. Whether on dry, wet, snowy or icy ground, their flexible rubber coupled with deep tread guarantees better surface grip. The road handling and driveability of the vehicle are optimised, and the braking distance is reduced.

Looking at the design features of winter tyres in more detail, after years of rigorous testing and development, the Landsail Winter Lander is a great example which delivers excellent performance in the snow and ice thanks to:

  • Snow traction groove design: The sipe pattern is organised in high-density waves so that each sipe can apply maximum force to the snowy road surface.
  • 3D stay-open sipes: These stay open when they make contact with the ground, so they can bite into snow more effectively.
  • Stiff shoulder design: The shoulder is specially designed with stiff blocks that deliver cornering stability and driving comfort.
  • Wet traction tread design: The V-shaped tread quickly evacuates water for outstanding wet handling, decreased aquaplaning and low noise.
  • Advanced winter-grip compound: The Winter Lander’s tread compound is specifically formulated for the cold — so it delivers enhanced traction and braking where warm-season tyres can’t.

But it’s important to remember that different vehicles need different winter tyres to ensure they are fit for purpose. With that in mind, Landsail also offers the Winter Star – a high-performance winter tyre specially designed for SUV and 4×4 vehicles – and Snow Star, a winter van tyre.

Winter Star

Ready to maximise the performance of a SUV and 4×4, the Winter Star has been designed with key features such as:

  • Cold weather silica compound which offers improved grip, traction and braking in the depths of winter.
  • Advanced shoulder design to evacuate water and reduce aquaplaning.
  • 3D sipes and winter-stable tread for enhanced snow handling.

Snow Star

In order to deliver the traction, durability and performance required for demanding cold weather conditions for a light commercial vehicle, its key design features include:

  • Sawtooth lateral grooves to maximise grip force and maintain handling.
  • Wet grip design for superior steering and aquaplaning resistance.
  • Advanced shoulder design reduces heat build-up and provides robust traction when cornering.

Of course, if you live in a region where mild winters are the norm and snowfall is only an occasional occurrence, then the smooth, quiet drive that comes with all-season tyres may be an appropriate alternative. Designed to keep drivers moving whatever the weather conditions, the tyre combines the technology of winter and summer tyres to enable safe driving at all times of year, on both dry and wet surfaces and even in snow.

For those who think all-season maybe for them, Landsail offers the 4SEASONS passenger tyre, as well as the 4SEASONS Van tyre.

4Seasons

The 4Season tyre provides a solid platform for tackling driving conditions in all climates with features such as:

  • Modern asymmetric tread design: A combination of summer and winter tyre design elements are optimally balanced for all-season driving.Lateral and longitudinal grooves: These provide a wide contact patch for excellent braking results on difficult road conditions as well as improving driving stability on snow and ice.
  • Wet-grip sipes and grooves: A micro-siped tread centre and inner part for increased traction and grip level on wet and covered snow roads.
  • Advanced tread compound: Advanced silica tread compound boosts rolling resistance and helps improve fuel efficiency.
  • Dry grip: Tread design creates a much larger contact area, allowing better stability, cornering and control.

4Seasons Van

Engineered to blend year-round handling and comfort with the longevity van drivers need, 4Seasons Van delivers performance throughout the seasons thanks to:

  • Modern asymmetric tread design: A combination of summer and winter tyre design elements are optimally balanced for all-season driving.
  • Lateral and Longitudinal Grooves: Provide efficient water dispersion and self-cleaning effect on snow as well as excellent running mileage.
  • Wet-grip sipes and grooves: Micro-siped tread centre and inner part for increased traction and grip level on wet and covered snow roads.
  • Advanced tread compound: Advanced silica tread compound boosts rolling resistance and helps improve fuel efficiency.

Whatever the season, it’s important to take a moment to review your tyres and check they are well-maintained and fit for purpose. With the right tyre, you can have the peace of mind of getting from A to B with excellent grip and comfort.
