The Mini Challenge Clubsport got off to a dramatic start at the iconic Silverstone circuit last weekend (17th-18th May). The weekend’s race action unfolded on the National circuit, a challenging layout known for its high-speed straights and demanding corners, providing the ultimate test for drivers and the Protoura Race control tyres.
The grid was made up of 15 drivers competing in the exciting series across three different classes of MINI: Class 1 – featuring the classic MINI Cooper S R53 powered by a 1.6-litre supercharged engine, Class 2 – featuring the MINI Cooper S R56, powered by a 1.6-litre turbocharged engine, and Class 3 – Standard MINI Cooper & non Cooper S models powered by a 1.6-litre naturally aspirated engine.
The race weekend marked a significant milestone. It was the first competitive outing in the Mini Challenge Clubsport series for the new Protoura Race tyre. This event followed the inaugural Swift Sport Challenge, which took place at Silverstone just a week earlier. As the new technical partner and commercial sponsor for the Mini Challenge Clubsport, Davanti had a prominent brand presence throughout the race weekend, establishing an exhibition area within the paddock, which served not only as a display of the product range, but also as a dedicated ‘VIP’ hospitality zone for drivers and team personnel. Each driver was also presented with a Davanti goody bag before the podium presentation, containing a variety of branded merchandise including a t-shirt, socks, belt, cap, football and stickers.
The on-track action commenced on Saturday (17th May) with practice and qualifying sessions held in the morning. These sessions were crucial for drivers to familiarise themselves with the circuit conditions, assess the performance of the Protoura tyres, and secure their grid positions for the afternoon’s opening race.
Race 1 took place on Saturday afternoon, delivering the close and exciting racing that the series is renowned for. Throughout the grid, intense battles unfolded, particularly amongst those vying for the coveted podium places. The winners of the opening race were Oli Willmott in the R56 class, Andy Langley in the R53 class, and Dan Truman in the Cooper class.
Saturday was rounded off with a podium presentation held in front of the Davanti exhibition unit, providing a fantastic backdrop for the celebrations and further highlighting the new partnership. The podium presentations were followed by a relaxed sunset garden social event, with drinks and music played into the evening, allowing drivers and their teams to socialise and share their experiences from the day’s racing.
Sunday (18th May) brought forth two more thrilling races, maintaining the theme of close racing action throughout the field. The drivers, now with a better understanding of the track and driving conditions, pushed their limits even further, resulting in some captivating battles for every position. The winners of Races 2 and 3 mirrored that of Race 1, with Oli Willmott in the R56 class, Andy Langley in the R53 class, and Dan Truman in the Cooper class dominating the top spots.
Following the Silverstone opener, clear leaders have emerged in the drivers’ standings for each class, setting the stage for continued excitement and intense competition as the season progresses.
The next round of the Mini Challenge Clubsport will take place at Thruxton on 5th-6th July. Check out the Davanti Tyres’ social channels for more information.
