How to avoid tyre-related breakdowns

27th January 2026

According to a study from data sourced by National Highways, 18.6% of motorway breakdowns were tyre-related issues, ranking top for the third year running.

This winter, it’s even more important that you remain vigilant about the state of your tyres. With the risks of ice, snow and heavy downpours, you don’t want to find out your tyres are at risk when it’s already too late.

But not to worry, we can support you in this tyre safety endeavour and have curated a list of useful checks you can add to your routine to ensure that you are tyre safe this Winter.

What are the common causes of tyre breakdowns?

Punctured Tyres

Punctured tyres are a risk at all times, with sharp objects on the road, such as glass or nails. You might believe there’s not a lot you can do to prevent such risk, but a few simple checks can give your tyres the best chance and reduce their susceptibility to punctures.

Firstly, check your tyre pressures often, ideally monthly. You can do this while you’re looking at your tyre tread for efficiency.

Check for any signs of ageing or degradation of the rubber around your tyres. Most of the time, these issues cannot be repaired; however, finding them early can prevent you from encountering a puncture or being stuck on the side of the road. Tyres with visible brittleness, cracks, or with a dot code older than 5 to 6 years should be replaced as soon as possible.

If you suffer a puncture, don’t panic. Slow punctures, in particular, may not spell the end for your tyre, so drive safely to your local tyre specialist. They will be able to assess the damage and provide you with options for repair or replacement. Typically, punctures directly in the tread can be fixed; however, damage to the sidewall is usually irreparable.

Insufficient tread depth

Last year, a study by the RAC and TyreSafe found that only 39% of drivers know the legal minimum tread depth for their tyres. This means 61% of drivers may be unaware that they may be driving on unsafe and illegal tyres. Tread depth accounts for the main cause of these avoidable tyre-related breakdowns, and beyond a risk to your safety, having tyres under the legal tread depth could mean a fine of £10,000 and 12 points on your licence.

Underinflated or overinflated tyres

Underinflated and overinflated tyres can both come with their own unique issues. Overinflated tyres mean less contact with the road, a more uncomfortable, bumpy drive, and an increased risk of a blowout. Underinflated tyres can reduce traction and grip, which in turn creates a buildup of excess heat, which will eventually cause premature breakdown of your tyres.

It’s always recommended to check your tyre inflation monthly. While most cars do have sensors in them to ensure they are at safe levels, this doesn’t account for all unexpected factors.

Monthly checks for tyre health:

Tyre pressure checks

While most modern cars have TPMS sensors, don’t let this give you the false impression that you can avoid regular checks of your tyres. Changes in both weight and temperature can have drastic impacts on your tyre pressures. Checking your tyres at least once a month – when the tyres are cold – will avoid premature wear from issues and save you a little money later on.

Check tread depth

Checking your tread depth regularly is an important habit which can save you money while keeping your vehicle safe and secure for you and your family. It takes only a few minutes, and you can do it at the same time as checking your tyre pressures.

Inspect all your tyres for damage

Look over both the inner and outer portions of your tyres, checking for any cuts, bulges, cracks or any foreign objects that you may have picked up in your driving. Even the smallest of objects, such as a nail, can compromise the structure of your tyres, which increases your risk of blowouts. If you find anything, take your vehicle to an expert as soon as it is safe to do so; don’t try to pull it out yourself, as it could be the only thing keeping the air in your tyre.

It’s important to remember that your tyres are your connection to the road, so maintaining their health is crucial. If you see any of the issues mentioned, always head to a professional.

The good news is that most tyre issues are preventable, and with some routine, you can drastically reduce the risk of a breakdown and improve your safety on the road.
