Get Road Trip Ready: How to Prep for a Smooth Staycation

9th May 2025

This summer, more people are opting for local adventures and roadtrips to make the most of the beauty of what’s right on their doorstep. Whether you’re planning a breezy day at the beach, a countryside escape, or a scenic road trip, a little prep can go a long way in making your staycation smoother and stress-free. Here’s our quick road trip checklist to make sure you and your ride are good to go.

Check your vehicle before hitting the road

Take some time in the run up to your trip to do a quick and simple vehicle health check. This will go a long way in spotting potential issues early and preventing any unexpected breakdowns that could throw a spanner in the works of your staycation plans. Here’s what to look out for:

  • Top up your engine oil, coolant, and screenwash as required.
  • Check your tyre tread and look for any signs of damage or uneven wear.
  • Make sure all vehicle lights are working properly.
  • Adjust tyre pressures according to the vehicle handbook.
  • Check your battery to ensure it’s in good shape.
  • Check that your spare tyre or puncture repair kit is good to go.
  • Confirm your brakes are functioning as they should.

Map out your journey

Avoid last-minute stress by planning your route in advance. Look up service stations, fuel stations and EV charging points along the way and determine where you should stop. If your drive is on the longer side, consider sharing driving duties to reduce fatigue.

Check for any planned roadworks or detours that could slow you down and keep an eye on the weather forecast. Tourist hotspots can get especially busy during peak times, so try to avoid starting or ending your journey during those hours to skip the worst of the traffic. It’s always good to have a backup route just in case.

Pack the essentials

  • Packing smart can turn a good road trip into a great one. Start with the must-haves:
  • Safety kit with a first aid box, torch, hi-vis vests, and a warning triangle.
  • Sunglasses, hats, and suncream for sunny days.
  • Waterproof jackets and extra layers for unpredictable weather.
  • Snacks, drinks, and entertainment to keep passengers happy.
  • Spare change for tolls and parking, just in case cards aren’t accepted.

Load up like a pro

How you pack your car matters. Start by placing heavy items at the base of the boot to keep the centre of gravity low and maintain stability, and spread the weight evenly across the car. Keep the rear window clear for visibility, and if you’re short on space, consider using a roof box. Make sure everything is secured to prevent movement while driving, especially on winding roads.
